Black and white disks are illustrated with graphics that are affected by the strobe in fascinating ways. You can interchange the disks on the fan and adjust the frequency of the strobe flash to see moving images or optical illusions. Go ahead and try your own pattern. Take a paper plate, draw a pattern on it, then place the finished pattern on the fan wheel.

  What's Happening Here?
How light affects how we see things, how frequency of the strobe flash can create different images, and how children can create their own visual patterns.

Discovery Questions:
What happens when you change patterns? What effect does the flickering of the strobe light have on things as they speed up? Is it better to use dark colors or light colors for your own pattern?
