Independent Contractors- Share Your Skills with CDMOD!
The Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert has and continues to enjoy the wealth of talents and skills brought to our members and families by Independent Contractors. It is with the Museum’s steadfast commitment to providing quality services in a safe environment that we require the following:

* Independent Contractors will sign an Independent Contractor Agreement with the Museum that is reviewed and approved by our Executive Director
* Independent Contractors will provide proof of commercial General Liability insurance in the amount of $1 million dollars per occurrence.
* Independent Contractors will provide the Museum with written proof of insurance (Certificate of Liability Insurance naming the Museum location as additional insured) at the time of entering into the above agreement
* Independent Contractors shall provide proof of licensed and/or authorized to do business in the state/city in which services will be rendered
* Independent Contractors must sign a “Working With Children Guidelines” provided by the Museum.
* All agreements and necessary insurances etc. shall be reviewed by the Executive Director prior to acceptance into service
* As a food service provider, in addition to the above- food vendors must provide current documentation of:
o Environmental Health Permit issued by the County of Riverside Community Health Agency Department of Environmental Health
o Seller’s Permit (if collecting a fee from patrons) issued by the California State Board of Equalization


Potential instructors should provide a written proposal for the Museum’s review. Proposals will be reviewed for relevancy to the Museum’s mission and should contain the following basic information:
* Goal of program
* Program Description (50 words or less)
* Target group to be served by program including age
* Course Length- sessions and time
* Space needed for program
* Enrollment – minimum and maximum numbers
* Fee for class*
* Additional costs or needs
* Is this program being offered at other organizations
* References and work history for background checks

* 1) It is agreed that the relationship of Contractor to CDMOD is that of an Independent Contractor and said Contractor is not an employee and therefore not eligible for unemployment insurance, disability insurance, worker's compensation, or employee benefits.
2) CDMOD shall have no power to direct or control the method used by Contractor to provide the services.
3) It is agreed that under the terms of this agreement the Contractor shall be considered as self-employed. Therefore, CDMOD will not withhold state or federal taxes nor deduct or make FICA payments. CDMOD does report contractor income via form 1099. Independent Contractors are paid a percentage of the registration collected for each contracted program.

Museum Gallery Assistant
Job Description

Position:  Gallery Assistant
Salary Range:  Hourly Wage; $8.25- $8.90 per hour
Supervisor:  Gallery Experience Manager

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Gallery Experience Manager, the Gallery Assistants provide support and maintenance to the Gallery, exhibits, and CDMOD volunteers and docents.  Most importantly, Gallery Assistants will provide exemplary customer service to our gallery visitors.

JOB SEGMENTS:

Gallery Staff & Visitor Interaction:
 
* Gallery Assistants are a visible extension the CDMOD staff.  Your presence in the Gallery is a reflection of CDMOD's image and ambiance.
* Gallery Assistants role with visitors will be varied.   Change is inevitable in the Gallery due to the fluctuation of traffic and visitor need.
* Gallery Assistants will provide encouragement, information, and ample materials to visitors to ensure a successful and positive experience.
* Gallery Assistants will be responsible for providing a safe, secure, and enjoyable atmosphere for the general public, members, field trips, and special events.
* Gallery Assistants will communicate regularly and in an appropriate, positive & supportive manner with staff, supervisors and visitors.
* Create & maintain a fun learning environment- daily safety & maintenance checks of each exhibit are required.
* Gallery Assistants must be able to work cooperatively as a team member and independently as needed.
* Provide for immediate response for Incident Reports using appropriate procedures and notifying senior staff and Gallery Experience Manager
* Practice safe methods for First Aid/Emergency Procedures/Blood Borne Pathogens.

Gallery Support & Maintenance:
* Maintain a safe environment for visitors at all times which may require but is not limited to:  removing items left on floor by guests, cleaning up spills or messes, and materials.
* Replenish supplies at end of each shift and prepare for next day activities, including moving gallery furniture and outdoor equipment as needed.
* Gallery Assistants must be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs and must be mobile to move through the entire gallery floor- standing is necessary.
* Follow cleaning routines as designated by exhibit developers, this will include physical work such as moving furniture, lifting and bending over.
* Inform Gallery Experience Manager of supply and/or maintenance needs

Volunteer & Docent Support:
* Assist the Volunteer Coordinator with the orientation & training of new Docents
* Provide support and encouragement to Volunteers & Docents
* Redirect Volunteers & Docents to Volunteer Coordinator for supervision when needed
* Relay to Volunteer Coordinator feedback on Volunteer & Docent performance

Internship Offerings!

Internship Opportunities with Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert for the Summer of 2009 are only accepting:  Early Childhood majors.

 Exhibition Impact Research Internship:

 Goals:
Assist the Volunteer Coordinator in order to study the correlation between Museum exhibits and impact in the

key areas of: education, interaction parent/child, educational continual response, recurrent visits and other areas. Discover

the key elements involved in creating relevant and meaningful exhibitions that shape messages, perspectives and values within the mission of CDMOD.

Requirements:
2-3 month commitment.
Produce written report with findings, conclusions and recommendations to Museum A minimum of 15 hours a week.
Bachelors degree or college enrolled in any of the related fields of study: sociology, psychology, early childhood education, marketing and medicine.
Computer knowledge 
Demonstrate the ability to interface with other departments as needed
Cross train in various Museum operations.

Summer Discovery Camp Internship

Goals:
Summer Discovery Camp , is a fun way to interact and learn during the summer. Each day children learn a theme through art, stories, crafts and special projects. The Discovery Camp experience brings children together through discovery of their world and layered educational experiences! Camp operational hours are 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. The camp is designed for children ages 5-9.

 Qualifications:
Develop and implement age specific curriculum under the instruction of Camp Director
Be able to lead large and small group activities under the guidance of camp staff
Participate in the preparation of camp space- including moving camp furniture and outdoor equipment as needed-  
Be able to provide for immediate response for Incident Reports using appropriate procedures.
Practice safe methods for First Aid/Emergency Procedures/Blood Borne Pathogens. Practice safe food handling process- ensure that camp assistant staff and volunteers follow there practices.
All Interns need to be willing and able to conduct both indoor and outdoor recreational activities
All Interns need to be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs- camp staff are responsible for set-up and take down of equipment/supplies, including the moving of camp equipment and furniture 

Requirements:
Strong interest in working with children
Attend orientation before camp and assist in coordination
Become and example and inspire children during summer camp 
All applicants are required to pass a criminal background check


Development Internship 

 Assist the Development department with projects aimed at maintaining the Museum's relationship with current donors.

 Goals: Plan and coordinate strategic efforts with Development department
 Study and submit report on current development strategies used, findings, conclusions and recommendations
 Undertake various projects as needed

 Requirements:
 2-3  month commitment.
A minmum of 15 hours a week.
Bachelors degree or college enrolled in any of the related fields of study: sociology, psychology, early childhood education, marketing and medicine.
Computer knowledge  
 

Merchandising and Retail Internship  

Students will  learn about the retail experience and toys as an extension of the education experience. Learn what  the correlation between: our Museum exhibits and current merchandise we offer at our unique store. Start with retail software, inventory and interact with our wonderful patrons. Gain the knowledge of the magical world of educational toys and the fun of discovery and inspire.

 Goals:

 Assist Operations Manager and Assistant Buyer in maintaining, improve and grow our retail sales through positive attitude, applied learning and team work.List of daily routine listed below:

All Interns need to be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs- merchandise/retail staff are responsible for set-up and take down of store displays
Provide analysis of item movement and inventory use
Develop creative floor plans and merchandise displays under the direction of the Retail Store Manager
Aid in the support of the e-store/web site marketing component of the Museum

 Requirements:

2-3 month commitment.
Produce written report with findings, conclusions and recommendations to Museum A minimum of 15 hours a week.
Bachelors degree or college enrolled in any of the related fields of study: merchandising and marketing .
Computer knowledge 
Demonstrate the ability to interface with other departments as needed
Cross train in various Museum operations.


 Public Relations Internship

 Strengthen your ability to identify community characteristics and needs, to define potential community roles and relationships to build and sustain reciprocal, mutually beneficial relationships and to explore and balance diverse perspective.

 Goals:

 Assist Development Department in different projects with the community
 Study and suggest recommendations in current programs to the Museum
 Interface with both departments as needed

Milestones to achive during your intership:

Aid in the development of outreach materials for public speaking engagements
Help create a public speaking calendar for the CDMOD staff members
Participate in business expositions or trade booth opportunities
All Interns need to be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs- PR staff are responsible for set-up and take down of equipment/supplies for trainings, expo’s and trade shows
Aid in research of other like institutions with an emphasis on the Southern California market and website trafficking

Requirements:

  2-3 month commitment.
Produce written report with findings, conclusions and recommendations to Museum A minimum of 15 hours a week.
Bachelors degree or college enrolled in any of the related fields of study: merchandising and marketing .
Computer knowledge 
Demonstrate the ability to interface with other departments as needed
Cross train in various Museum operations.

 Special Events Internship

One of the most critical aspects of managing a museum is to strategically create opportunities of growth. Students will consider the local, regional, national and international context when preparing for this internship, which will raise awareness of the Museum and strengthen the organizational outcome.

 Goals:

Learn strategic event planning and assist the current Event Planner Coordinator
Assist in research of vendors and locations
Draft marketing plans and potential earnings graphs, all support material needed for different events and projects

 Requirements:

2-3 month commitment.
Produce written report with findings, conclusions and recommendations to Museum A minimum of 15 hours a week.
Bachelors degree or college enrolled in any of the related fields of study: Public relations, journalism, mass communication or marketing (other business concentrations will be considered)
Computer knowledge 
Demonstrate the ability to interface with other departments as needed
Cross train in various Museum operations.
