> The Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert is a private non-profit institution founded in 1986 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to provide an environment where children's intellectual curiosity and self-expression could be freely expressed through play. Their goal was to provide inventive and interactive exhibits and programs, which encourage children to learn about themselves and the world around them.
> MISSION STATEMENT: The Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert inspires and promotes intellectual curiosity and self expression through inventive and interactive exhibits and programs. It encourages children to learn about themselves and the world around them by exploring the natural environment and the community. The Museum serves children of all ages with particular emphasis on primary school age children of the Coachella Valley. The Museum also serves as a resource to its community through the development of special programs and collaborations with other organizations.
> The current Museum facility, located just west of the intersection of Bob Hope on Gerald Ford Drive in Rancho Mirage, boasts 8,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits for the whole family to enjoy. Situated on 6.5 acres donated by Ambassador and Mrs. Annenberg, the campus also includes a multipurpose performance center, outdoor amphitheater, covered picnic area, museum store, and a citrus grove.
> In addition to the main exhibit gallery, the museum offers school field trips, group tours, special musical performances and events, art classes, ballet classes, birthday parties, holiday and summer camps, toddler classes, teen programs, kindergarten readiness workshops, educational outreach programs on school campuses, and other quality programs and services for all ages. Also, facilities are available for private party use, corporate events, and family reunions.
> The Museum has served over 600,000 people since its opening of the new facility in 1998, including over 80,000 school children opn field trips
> The Development Committee of the Museum holds annual Home Tour and Duck Pluck fundraising events and regularly recruits local businesses and corporations to help raise funds for the Museum. In addition, the annual Children's Champion Award Gala celebrates outstanding individuals, corporations and foundations who champion for education for children in the local community. Funds raised are used for program development, program subsidy, and to help keep fees affordable to all. The Museum also offers scholarships to those who may not be able to meet the costs of specific programs, services, field trips and membership.
